Charlee & Daniel (& Vinnie)
Hastings Pier Engagement Shoot
I don’t think I had ever been to Hastings before I came down for Charlee and Daniel’s Hastings Pier engagement shoot. I remember reading about when Hastings Pier had burnt down in 2010, but that was the extent of my knowledge. Seaside towns always have that sleepy air to them, especially when you’re used to London. Even the hustle and bustle of the main shopping centre seemed relatively serene to me. Maybe it’s the sound of gulls or the fresh sea air but I think it’s good for those of us who are city dwellers to travel there occasionally.
Travelling down on the train through the drizzle I wasn’t sure whether we would get a session in at all, let alone be able to see the sea. But although it was pretty heavy cloud cover there was no rain, giving a moody and dramatic feeling to today’s images.
Charlee, who is studying photography at college, is more used to being behind a camera than in front of it whilst Daniel works for a charity up in London. They are a lovely couple, and it was a nice session where I probably talked about photography more than normal. Hopefully some of it will be useful to you Charlee on your future journey! Their shoot was a fun one, and one with a surprise halfway through…
Hastings Beach Huts
I couldn’t resist taking some photographs with these colourful beach huts. I think they are often little pop up shops but maybe due to the weather and season they were all shut up. Given the clouds I shot them in a relatively low-key fashion (I often see these huts in high-key with super bright colours). I love the way it has pulled the clouds right down. You still get the lovely contrast of the colours but rather than dominate, they make Charlee and Daniel stand out.
I hadn’t realised that Charlee and Daniel were going to bring their dog along to the shoot. Their friends had been looking after him up until this point but we thought we really should get him in on the action! Vinnie is a Staffordshire Labrador cross. He is quite young but was really great as I fooled around trying to get his attention behind the camera.
Hastings is one of Charlee & Daniel’s favourite places, and I can see why they picked it for their engagement session. Even with the slightly cold and gloomy weather it was rather lovely. We made our way down to Hastings Beach and walked along the pebbles.
Congratulations on your engagement Charlee and Daniel! (and Vinnie)
